Treat Yourself - Why Massages Are Good For Your Health

Billions of dollars are spent each year by people who want to make themselves feel better. Whether this money is spent on beauty, fashion, or gym memberships this money goes towards making our ever stressed out population feel just a little bit better mental or physically. Well now studies show that getting a massage has some great health benefits that will make you want to indulge! In fact, research shows that getting messages can ease insomnia, boost immunity, prevent PMS, and more.

With regular massages you can effectively say goodbye to pain. This may seem like somewhat of a no brainer but rubdowns can be especially effective for back pain. Some researchers have even found that getting a massage actually works better than other treatments such as chiropractic therapy and acupuncture. This happens because get massaged boosts the feel good hormone serotonin and dopamine which blocks your nervous system's pain receptors.

If you struggle for insomnia you can say hello to dreams with massages as well. Studies have found that getting massages increase delta waves which are linked with deep sleep. No wonder you find yourself drifting whenever you are on the table!

It has also been found that getting massaged actually helps prevent you from getting sick. It boosts your natural fighting cells, which is the immune system's first line of defense against invading germs and bacteria. Researchers have known that cortisol destroys fighting cells and since they also found that getting massaged decreases cortisol levels it automatically gives your immune system a boost. In fact, massage has even been found to boost immunity in those people with compromised immune systems, such as cancer patients.

Decreased levels of cortisol and more serotonin and dopamine also mean less stress, anxiety, and depression in general. This increased sense of relaxation is one reason why some hospitals offer massage to anxious patients awaiting surgery and cancer patients going through chemo.

Finally, it is no big surprise that if you are an active person, massage can cause less cramps and pain due to the improved blood circulation that delivers oxygen and nutrients to the cells. So when you start to feel guilty about treating yourself to a massage just remind yourself about all of these awesome health benefits you get from them!

Cosmetics - Why Strive to Look Our Best - Why Skin Care and Makeup Are So Important

Women put a great deal of importance on cosmetics, mascara and lipstick to make themselves attractive. They feel good about themselves when they are all dolled-up with cosmetics. Just hearing someone say, "you look nice today", can make their day. Yes, cosmetics, mascara and lipstick have become basic necessities for well dressed women. In fact, most women do not feel that they are good looking without makeup. They feel they will be adversely judged if they do not look pretty. Is there some truth to this? Does society put such emphasis on appearance?

Even though looks shouldn't matter, the question arises-do good looking people get treated with favoritism? Do they tend to have greater advantages in life? For example, would a stranger be more inclined to come to the aid of a woman who is very attractive? Might she receive better service at the auto shop? Simply because she is good looking?

An experiment was conducted in New York city. Two women were given folders filled with papers. They were told to drop them on a busy sidewalk and observe what would happen. Would anyone help them? When the attractive woman dropped her folder, suddenly people immediately came to help. Then she observed the other "average looking" woman drop her folder. She was saddened when nobody came to her friend's assistance.

Why this differential treatment? Is this strictly a cultural phenomenon? Do we learn this from observing and imitating others? Well, studies show that babies will look more intently and longer at prettier faces. If infants could not possibly be influenced to be biased at this tender age, then we must somehow be hard-wired, rather than conditioned, to respond more favorably to more attractive people.

What can we do about it?

If it truly is an intrinsic quality of humans to show a more favorable disposition to more attractive people, then there is very little we can do about it. All the rebellion in the world won't change human nature. If someone pays us a compliment by telling us how nice we look, would we chastise them? Would we question why they show partiality? No, rather, we would be grateful for this compliment and view it as a human kindness.

How to accept this ugly truth?

It will be easier for us to accept this human tendency if we admit that we ourselves at times are partial to this kind of admiration. Depending on if it is to our advantage or not. Favorable when it is to our advantage; not-favorable when we are at the short end of the stick. We must be realistic and remember that a person's physical attractiveness, just like their personality, impacts every individual literally from birth to death. As unfair as at that may be, it's reality. We can never change that. The best thing that we can do is change our attitude, learn from others and use it to our advantage.

How to use it to our advantage?

Movie stars are usually renowned for their good looks. To them, their appearance is a top priority. This is because their livelihood depends on it. In fact, some are noted to say, "It is better to look good, than to feel good!" Although, we may view this as an inordinate emphasis on vanity, in reality, it may not be. Think about it! Would they have achieved stardom in show-business due to their excellent health? Of course not! Image is everything in their world. They just know how to project their image to the best of their advantage. We must learn to do the same.

What can we learn from movie stars?

If movie stars put their best foot forwards, wouldn't we gain limited success by applying their thinking? Consider this-just because a movie star is naturally good looking, doesn't cause her to not wear makeup. No, she will actually put emphasis on it. Consulting makeup artists to achieve her best natural look. Accentuating the positive, and making negative features less noticeable. Their livelihood and reputation depends on their taking every advantage to look their very best, on camera and off.

How to capitalize on your looks?

Movie stars are privileged to employ the efforts of various makeup artists to achieve their best look. This gives a fresh perspective on what may look better. However, most women who are not in show business, have only done their own makeup application. As a habit, they may be using unfavorable colors and application methods. If you feel like you need a new perspective, why not consult a makeup artist? Their fresh approach and greater experience, might be just what you need to accentuate your best facial features. It is common for women to consult their hair-dressers for a new look-why not do the same with a makeup artist?

How natural cosmetics can help?

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to just accentuate positive facial features and not have to cover up imperfections. Well, the truth is many skin problems are actually a result of makeup! Most makeup products contain chemicals that irritate the skin and cause blemishes, discoloration, redness and dryness. Instead of covering up facial flaws with synthetic blends of makeup, why not try to correct these flaws by the use of natural cosmetics? You will be surprised how much better your skin will look and feel. Also you will not need to wear as much foundation and makeup! This will save you time, money, and you will be able to concentrate on accentuating positives!

Yes, looks do matter! We do live in a society that puts a great deal of emphasis on appearance. Without cosmetics, society views women as not fully dressed. We can't change that. But we can take advantage of this. By wearing cosmetics in a way that accentuates our appearance, cosmetics can actually open doors that may otherwise be closed.

Two types of stressors and solutions

As a subdivision, I need to make the distinction between the two types of stressor: physical and psychological. To try and make this a bit clearer, I have created a list of the type of stressors I am talking about, and the likely effects that they have.

1: Examples of physical stressors that create a healthy response:

Exercise
Competitive sport.
Massage**
Sauna
Moderate alcohol consumption
Singing
Bungee jumping
Rock climbing
Roller-coaster rides

2: Examples of psychological stressors that create a healthy stress
response:

Your football team winning
Passing an exam
Clinching a successful business deal
Organising an enjoyable social evening
A tight sales deadline - but not too tight
Giving a well-received lecture
A busy shift in Accident and Emergency with no one dying
Being Prime Minister

3: Examples of physical stressors that create an unhealthy stress response:

Excessive, intense, forced exercise in adverse conditions, e.g. working deep below the ground in a coal mine in Russia
Extreme environmental change/rapid alteration in temperature
Being a fighter-jet pilot
Rheumatoid arthritis
Cocaine use
Smoking
Eating under pressure
Major trauma/surgery
Spinal cord injury
Steroid use
Disease of the hormonal system
- Cushing's disease (too much cortisol)
- Phaechromocytoma (too much adrenaline)
- Diabetes (too much blood sugar)
- Acromegaly (too much growth hormone)

4: Examples of psychological stressors that create an unhealthy stress
response:

Bullying boss
Suffering racism
Being 'dislocated' from the surrounding population/culture
Money worries, long-term debt
Low status in social hierarchy
Poor social network
Non-supportive, unloving or abusive spouse
Football team losing
Getting caught in an earthquake (though this is a physical stressor too)
Getting up on Monday morning
Forced emigration/social dislocation
The number four

Why a Day Spa is good for you

Day spa treatments are more popular than ever. It's because of the services they offer to rejuvenate your face and body, and make you feel great. You can have it all at the day spa. Here are the three biggest reasons why we flock to day spas:

1. Facials

Sun, smoke, pollution, bad eating habits, the wear and tear of everyday life everyday our skin is under attack. A facial allows a professional to rejuvenate your face's skin and renew your complexion. Facials are great for overall skin health, but they can also be used to get rid of blemishes, acne and scars. You can get a facial to reduce the puffiness around your eyes that make you look ten years older than you really are.

Best of all, your skin gets rehydrated. Dry skin can cause the worst damage to your face. Let a professional at a day spa take a look at your skin and make an evaluation. These folks have years of experience and are certified in order to most effectively combat attacks of stress and aging. Usually, a facial involves thirty minutes to an hour of steam treatment, or a clay mask. Just an hour of rest and facial treatment, and you won't believe the wonders that can be worked.

2. Massages

Who needs to be told about the benefits of a good massage? Massages are great for you, and a massage from a qualified professional is absolutely divine. The main benefit of a good massage is that it relaxes you and reduces stress. A skilled professional can work on specific areas of tightness and stiffness, alleviate back pain and even treat chronic headaches. Massages also promote good circulation and boost the immune system naturally.

There are mental and emotional benefits as well as physical. Massages can sometimes treat depression, fatigue disorders, anxiety problems and other mental disorders related to everyday stress. The massage is the best overall treatment to go for. You can get the best massages in the world at a good day spa. After all, this is what they do! Let yourself be pampered and treated by a skilled masseuse and you'll feel the difference immediately.

3. Body Wraps

Wraps are great for your whole body's skin. The main benefit is skin rejuvenation. Body wraps moisturize and cleanse by getting rid of dead cells and excess impurity. You can also eliminate unneeded water. Like a lizard, you can step out of your old skin into a newer, healthier you.

There are different kinds of wraps. Some are geared toward specific outcomes. For example, there are body wraps that help to enhance metabolism. Others target the toxins that build up over time.

With a body wrap, you may find other beneficial outcomes you didn't expect, like weight loss. Wraps use mud, clay, seaweed, algae, cream, natural lotions and other materials, and we don't even know all the benefits they offer! Wraps last for about an hour. Then, the stuff is washed off and you can enjoy your rejuvenated body.

Day spa treatments are popular because they are all-natural, and they work wonders. What could be better than letting skilled professionals at a day spa help you cope with the stresses of everyday life. Check out day spas in your area today!

Seaweed Detoxifying Body Treatments

Seaweed body masks are just wonderful. While you relax and enjoy this soothing experience, your body is being gently assisted in flushing out toxins and your skin is tightening. This is something that truly everyone should benefit from.
Relax and enjoy while the magic happens. The seaweed contains all the goodness from the ocean, which includes, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, trace elements and sea salt. This mask contain kelp or bladderwrack which is a form of brown algae. Afterwards you have a detoxifying massage with a moisturizing treatment with creams or lotions, to keep in the effect of the moisturizing properties of the seaweed.

These masks help exfoliate your skin, and leaves the skin smooth and tightened up. It's therefore great if you have stretch marks, cellulite or sagging skin in general. This is because fat deposits are more evenly distributed so your body gets a smoother look. Also, the excess fat in your cells is diminished by this process so you can end up losing inches too! Also your skin can now retain moisture better so you will have a natural glow to your skin.

Not only that, but these mask can soothe joint pain, sore muscles and arthritis. It's also good for people who have water retention problems.

Your blood circulation is stimulated with increased blood flow.
However, the best thing is that these masks help eliminate toxins. The skin is your body's largest organ and now large areas are soaked in this special seaweed solution so toxins have the chance to be removed for a great inner cleansing. It's recommended to drink lots of water afterward because this assists in the elimination process by continuing the flushing effect.

You can enjoy these seaweed body mask at spas, health resorts or even at home. It's good to indulge in these at least once a week.

Lymphatic Drainage

Although you may never have heard of this alternative health treatment before... after reading this-- you will be kicking yourself for not trying it sooner.

Lymphatic what?

Don't feel bad-- in fact that is what most people say when I tell them about how I help people deal with their chronic health frustarions.

Not many people know this but our sinuses are actually like little pockets of air located all over our head, face, and body that get filled up with a fluid called lymph. What then is lymph? Lymph is the fluid that flows from our lymph nodes then thru our sinuses to cooperate with our white blood cells to protect our bodies from being infected by things like cancer cells, fungi, bacteria & viruses.

How can I put this simply...Lymph is to our lymphatic system what blood is to our circulatory system.

Now here's the thing though--

While our circulatory system has the heart to pump and keep it moving and flowing... the lymphatic system does not.

In fact your lymph depends 100% on your skeletal muscular system moving it thru your joints. In other words-- when our bones & muscles are in optimal order, the lymph flows thru our system like a well-oiled machine.

Here lies the problem however...

How many of us are in tip- top shape with no aches and pains resulting from strained muscles or misaligned bones?

Can you see how this might cause problems?

If the lymph is not flowing freely it eventually fills up the pockets or sinus areas and blocks them up. It then could then cause swelling, add weight on us & become a breeding ground of infection. As you can imagine this can easily lead to a whole bunch of sinus related joint related and even weight related problems.

Think about that for a moment...

How many people do you know that complain from sinus, joint & weight related problems?
Perhaps one or more of these chronic issues that cause pain and frustration may affect you yourself. Perhaps you may even be taking one or more medications to address these problems.

Wouldn't it be nice if there was a way to safely and naturally drain these areas without resorting to taking any more medications that may or may not cause side effects?

Now you can see why a therapy like manual Lymphatic Drainage has caught on in recent years.

A certified massage therapist that is trained and skilled in MLD knows exactly where all of your lymph nodes are located thru out your body. Then by a series of gentle, rhythmic massaging of the skin your lymph nodes can be stimulated to open and drain. The massaging may be done by hand as well as by using a little suction cup that actually draws out the lymph. The treatment is very comfortable and is not aggressive at all. You can expect a typical session will involve drainage of the head, neck, abdomen, trunk, & your extremities and will last anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour.

Notice what one client had to say who complained of sinus headache pressure for years , which kept her from getting a good 8 hours sleep & left her tired and listless all the time.

"I was doubtful that this would work but after one treatment I did feel a difference. I felt my sinuses drain for the first time in a long time. After several treatments I no longer had to use my nose drops all night long to keep me from clogging up. I am finally sleeping."

While a massage therapist cannot diagnose, treat or claim to cure any disease (Only your doctor can do that) you too may find sinus relief as thousands of others have by trying Lymphatic Drainage Massage Therapy.

The importance of Facials

Due to continuous exposure to pollution, dust particles and harmful sun rays, our skin develops wrinkles, dark spots, black heads, acnes and pigmentation. There are many surgical and non surgical skin enhancement treatments available to make your skin look rejuvenated, spotless and youthful. Amongst the non-surgical category, facial treatments are the most common and popular treatment.

Facials are easily available at beauty salons and spa centres. These are extremely relaxing, rejuvenating and beneficial for the skin. There are many types of facial treatments available, which uses different techniques and facial kits depending on the skin types, desired end results and the maturity if the skin.

There are two basic techniques used for facials: Hands on and Electrotherapy. The 'hands on' technique uses special stimulating hand movements and massage movements, that removes the dead skin from the face, reduces fine lines, stimulates generation of new cells and removes black heads. The electrotherapy electronic hand-held devices are used and no hand movements are used. Both have their own specified advantages and benefits.

Hand-On Facial Treatment:

In these treatments, the therapist or beautician uses her hands for massaging the face. No electronic devices, except a steam machine, are used in this process.

Facial kits used in this treatments, are all oil or cream based. Essential oils, gels or moisturising creams can be used, depending upon the type of skin, maturity of skin and the treatment. Gels are mostly used for oily and acne prone skins and oils or moisturising creams are used for dry to normal and matured skin types.

A clay or mud based face pack is used after the cleansing process and steam process (optional) is over to close the open pores and to provide nutrition to the skin. Sometimes for sensitive skins a peel off face mask is also used. These masks are gently peeled off from the face after they dry up. This peel off mask also works as an uplifting treatment as it tightens the skin.

Electrotherapy Facial treatment:

These treatments use machines, mostly hand held, for facials. There are basically three types of most commonly used electrotherapy treatments, depending upon the skin types.

High Frequency Treatments: Gauze is placed on the face and a glass electrode is passed over the face. This treatment is best suited for oily and acne prone skin as it helps in drying out spots and has antibacterial effects. For Dry to normal skin types, indirect frequency treatment is used.
Galvanic Treatments: An active ingredient is introduced deep into the facial skin by metal rollers massaging the skin. Suitable for all skin types.
Micro current Treatments: this facial is used for uplifting the facial skin and for enhancing the skin texture and colour.

All the above mentioned facial treatments helps in improving the texture, quality and appearance of the facial skin and imparts you a more youthful and spotless look.

Massage Therapy - Soldiers Can Benefit Just As Athletes Have Relied Upon Massage Therapy For Decades

Massage Therapy - Soldiers Can Benefit Just As Athletes Have Relied Upon Massage Therapy For Decades
By Daniel'>http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Daniel_P_Elliott">Daniel P Elliott

Massage has numerous physical, mental, and physiological health benefits. Therapeutic massage is especially important for athletes and military personnel, not only helping the body recover from injury, but also preventing injury and helping to promote increased blood circulation. A well-trained masseur can help keep athletes and soldiers in peak physical condition at any stage of training through sports oriented massage techniques.

Through massage therapy, the body increases blood and lymph cell activity to damaged and deprived areas to stimulate repair. The deep tissue types of massage can help to reduce lactic acid build up and enable muscles to recover easier. Massage can even be used to stimulate breakdown of previous scar tissue and increase the elasticity of the muscles. The benefits help to physically repair and maintain an athlete or soldier's body.

Physiologically, an athlete or soldier's body can endure quite a beating at times. Massage can help reduce tension in the muscles that can cause pain and inflammation. Therapeutic massage can even be preferred over pain medications. Before or after a body's exertion, massage can help to soothe, calm, and relax the individual.

Mentally, an athlete or soldier needs to be constantly prepared. Constantly being on edge or at-the-ready causes anxiety and stress. Theses stressors, though ensuring alertness, also impact performance. Massage can assist in reducing these feelings of anxiety and help with mental acuity.

Working with an experienced masseur and practicing a proper massage routine, many athletes and soldiers can keep their body in peak performance condition. Both athletes and military personnel are dependent on their bodies to keep them in action, and each relies on their body to overcome and succeed beyond normal mental and physical limits. By preventing injuries and stimulating muscles through massage, their bodies will reward them with peak performance.
